The BRIDGES project

BRIDGES – Building Reconciliation and Peace through Inclusive Dialogue, Gender Equality, Sport and Protection of Cultural Heritage.

January 2024 – December 2026

Description

Daily life of people living in Puntland and Galmudug States of Somalia is affected by a myriad of inter and intra-clan conflicts. Minor clan disputes can easily degenerate into armed confrontations, with affected parties suffering the ultimate loss of lives, hundreds of households displaced, and leading to subsequent retaliations and revenge attacks. Historical mistrusts between the warring parties remain the common denominator of all disputes, which are frequently fueled by political interests and the struggle for political supremacy. Conflicts are usually ignited by disputes over land ownership, land grazing and access to natural resources. Such conflicts are known to also escalate quickly, and can regularly become border disputes, as it has happened between Puntland and Galmudug States, and, more recently, in the Nuugal and Sool regions on the border between Puntland and Somaliland. Such conflicts become intertwined in regional and national political processes, driven by political elites and local warlords and groups, such as the extremist group Al-Shabaab, which are primarily interested in maintaining patronage networks and localised power centres.

“BRIDGES” is an European Union funded project which focuses on empowering civil society, particularly women and youth, to lead peace efforts and advocate for human rights and inclusion. It emphasises dialogue, gender equality, sports, and cultural heritage protection to foster reconciliation and peace. The project aims to cultivate a culture of freedom of expression and inclusion within communities undergoing conflict or transition.

The overall program objective is to empower, strengthen and mobilise Somali civic society actors to lead peace and reconciliation processes, foster freedom of expression, and promote a Human Rights culture in Puntland and Galmudug States of Somalia.

Some of the proposed activities that will be carried out as part of this project include:

– Participatory Action Research

-Workshops for journalists and media communicators on conflict and gender -sensitive communication, and peace-centred cultural practices

-Sensitisation workshops with women and youth groups on the use of poetry and music to promote reconciliation

-Organisation of Peace-Centred and Gender inclusive Sports events.
